 Velddrif is located some two kilometres upstream from where the meandering Berg River flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the Bay of St. Helena. A century ago the wheat harvest from the Sandveld was brought down the Berg River to a storing place near the river mouth. This "loading place" eventually became Laaiplek, which now abutts Velddrif. In 1968 a channel was blasted, linking the river with the ocean, completing the fishing harbour of Laaiplek.
